Van Rossum’s Rich History

Het Arsenaal, a historic national monument in which Van Rossum Woerden Café Restaurant Stadshotel is located, has played a major role in the rich and diverse history of Woerden, the city that once served as headquarters of the Hollandse Waterlinie.

Woerden was a strategically important city due to its location between the major cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Den Haag. Het Arsenaal functioned as a defensive stronghold and played a crucial role in protecting the city and its surroundings.

Het Arsenaal in Woerden is not only a beautiful example of historic architecture, but also a tangible reminder of the city’s past. Over the centuries, the building has adapted to the changing needs of the community and remains an important symbol of local identity and pride. Thanks to the preservation of Het Arsenaal, future generations can continue to enjoy this piece of living history in the heart of Woerden.

Het Arsenaal was built in the 16th century as a military complex and served as a storage facility for weapons, ammunition and other military supplies.

The building has a square layout and originally consisted of one floor. A wall in the middle once divided the building into two sections. The larger section was used as a warehouse, while the smaller section housed the workshops where repairs were carried out.

After 1970, Het Arsenaal lost its military function and was only used occasionally, such as during the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the city of Woerden.

After the municipality purchased the building in 1973, a major restoration began in the summer of 1977.

On 30 March 1979, the building was reopened as a socio-cultural centre and hospitality venue.

In 2012, the property was sold by the municipality. Two years later, in 2014, the sustainable renovation and redevelopment of Het Arsenaal began, which today serves as Van Rossum Woerden Café Restaurant Stadshotel.
